There are more single engine aircraft than any other in the world of aviation. Single engine piston aircraft for sale are the most popular due to their low operating cost (per Nautical Mile / NM) and ease of use, without the need for additional endorsements and qualifications.

Single engine piston General Aviation aircraft remain the most popular world-wide for their durability, cabin size and weight carrying capabilities, low running costs and endurance – in comparison to ultra-light recreational aircraft (under 600kg Maximum Take Off Weight) and multi-engine, turbines and corporate jets.

The most popular General Aviation types to own are the Cessna 150/152, Cessna 172, 182, 200 series, the PA-28 Cherokee series (Piper PA-28 140, Warrior, Archer, Pathfinder, Arrow), Beechcraft A36/G36 Bonanza types and the Cirrus SR20 and SR22.

Each of these types has stood the test of time, with the ‘big 3’ brand of aircraft still being produced (Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft) and Cirrus continue using to dominate their segment in competition.

While each of the ‘big 3′ offer upgraded avionics and systems and minor variations to cabin layouts, the tried and tested airframe and wing designs from the 1950′, 1960’ and 1970’s remain almost unchanged. In fact, the two power plant (engine) manufacturers, Lycoming and Continental continue to power all 4 of these popular single engine types today, with very similar engine designs.

In the piston engine helicopter ranges, the Robinson Helicopter Company dominates with their Robinson R-22 and R-44 single engine piston range, while other popular models include the Hughes Model 269 (marketed as the Hughes 300) and the Bell 47.

General Aviation (GA) refers to all aviation except for larger RPT (Regular Public Transport) or Commercial (operations for hire or reward). It’s a broad term, and a very broad industry.

In many cases, especially in Australia, the GA community tends to use the term to differentiate from Recreational Aviation, because Australia has a self-governing body in that space, called RAAus (Recreational Aviation Australia), but the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) includes recreational aviation in the definition.

Helicopters, gliders, balloons, gyros, trikes and 3-axis aircraft remain within the definition of General Aviation.

The question of whether a single or a twin (multi-engined) aircraft is safer comes down to the evidence. In a well-known study in the USA, the NTSB concluded that the likelihood of an engine failure situation being fatal was four times (x4) greater in a twin-engine aircraft than a single.

And obviously, there is approximately double the chance of a failure occurring in a twin-engined aircraft, than a single.

So why is this fatality rate so starkly different? The answer lies in a multitude of factors, including poor preparedness and ‘engine-failure recency’ of multi-engined pilots, the difficulties associated with asymmetric operations from the standpoint of control, and the poor performance of multi-engined aircraft on half the power available.

In the case of a full engine failure in a single-engine aircraft, the pilot has to conduct a forced landing. In a multi-engine aircraft, the pilot must follow a specific set of drills, establish and maintain control of the aircraft, maintain airspeed and gain performance to climb to a safe altitude. The options to divert to a nearby field improve, but the burden on the pilot to make the correct decisions and apply the correct actions is higher.
