Before the Van's Aircraft range became popular in the 1990's, there was the Thorp T-18. Setting the gold-standard for experimental aircraft design and easy home-build technology, the T-18 provided experimental builders the opportunity to fly economically, fast, and get into aviation relatively cheaply. In earnest, the type should have gone further, and there are now around 400 completed aircraft flying, from 1600 plans sold world-wide.
